GSM (grams per square metre) is fabric weight. For hotel towels it is the key quality signal: 300–400 GSM are light and quick-drying, 450–550 GSM suit most hotels, and 600–700 GSM feel plush and luxurious. Higher GSM is more absorbent but slower to dry and costs more.

GSM stands for grams per square metre — the weight of one square metre of fabric. For towels especially, GSM is the single most useful number: a higher GSM means more cotton per area, so the towel feels denser, more absorbent and more luxurious — but it also costs more and takes longer to dry.

Towel GSM is the clearest buying signal. As a rule of thumb:

Sheets are more often described by thread count, but GSM still matters — heavier sheeting (in poly-cotton especially) wears longer under industrial laundry. Bath mats are sold by GSM too, typically 700–1100 GSM for a stable, absorbent mat.
