Hotel Linen Buying Guide

Shrinkage & Pilling in Hotel Linen: Causes and How to Avoid Them

Shrinkage and pilling are the two most common linen complaints. Here's why they happen, how much to expect, and how to spec linen that resists both.

Shrinkage: Why It Happens

Cotton fibres relax and contract when washed and dried hot, so untreated cotton can shrink noticeably — often 3–8% — mostly in the first few washes. Poly-cotton shrinks far less. The fix is pre-shrinking/compaction at the mill and building a shrinkage allowance into the cut size.

How to Avoid Shrinkage Problems

  • Choose poly-cotton where dimensional stability matters.
  • Ask for pre-shrunk (sanforized/compacted) fabric.
  • Have us add a shrinkage allowance to cut sizes.
  • Confirm a maximum shrinkage spec and test it on samples.

Pilling: Why It Happens

Pills are tangled balls of broken/loose fibres on the surface, caused by abrasion. Short-staple cotton and some polyester blends pill more; long-staple combed cotton and tight weaves resist it. Industrial laundering accelerates pilling on weak fabric.

How to Avoid Pilling

  • Specify combed/long-staple cotton or quality poly-cotton.
  • Choose a tight, even weave (e.g. percale).
  • Avoid the cheapest short-fibre fabrics for high-wash items.
  • Test wash samples before bulk.
FAQ

Common Questions

How much do cotton sheets shrink?

Untreated cotton can shrink around 3–8%, mostly in the first washes. Pre-shrunk (sanforized/compacted) fabric and a built-in shrinkage allowance keep finished sizes accurate; poly-cotton shrinks much less.

Why do hotel towels and sheets pill?

Pilling comes from abrasion on short-staple or weak-blend fabrics. Combed/long-staple cotton, quality poly-cotton and tight weaves resist it. We spec fabric and weave to minimise pilling and can wash-test samples.

Can you guarantee low shrinkage and pilling?

We use pre-shrunk fabrics, shrinkage allowances and quality fibres, and can agree a maximum shrinkage spec and arrange sample testing — so performance is confirmed before bulk.
